Lots of us tend to shy away from using furniture in hallways, especially in those that aren't wide enough to drive a truck down. When faced with a long fairly narrow hall that ends in a blank wall, we usually hang a picture and forget it. Still, one piece of furniture looks good and performs well in that sort of awkward spot. The console table is a versatile solution to small hallway furniture dilemmas.
For starters, if you have a blank wall at the end, it is probably already screaming for a table. You know that consoles are designed to back against a wall or sofa, leaving only three sides visible. They come in lots of different sizes. That means there is probably one perfect for this end of the hall spot. It can give your hall definition as a room, not just a corridor. Plus, it can provide space for things such as a nightlight, a flashlight, extra linens, etc.

If your narrow hall ends in a door, you might still be able to squeeze a narrow console table along one side. You do want to measure carefully to ensure that it doesn't block the flow of traffic. So drag out the measuring tape. If you have a three feet left to pass by it, it fits. If you have two and a half feet, it's a tight fit. If there are two feet or less, it's too big. If it does fit, it can perform like that end-of-the-hall table, just from a different angle.
Some halls are going to be too small for anything but a hanging shelf or a maybe that obligatory painting. If however, you can manage to fit one in, a console can turn a dull hall into an interesting addition to your home without any help from a contractor
